Eliyahu M. Goldratt’s book, The Goal by Goldratt explores various ways in which managers think and implement changes within an organization. Alex Rogo, the manager at the subsidiary plant of UNICO Manufacturing Company is the main character in the novel. The book shows how he contends with both intrinsic and extrinsic constraints to improve the plant.
The author begins the narration on a usual day when Alex goes to work. Upon arrival, he encounters his boss’ vehicle occupying his space in the parking lot. The vice president’s (Bill) presence at the firm renders every staff member uneasy and immensely tense.
Indeed, his boss is here to seek an explanation and assist in finding a way forward in reducing shipment delays within the division. However, against their expectation of Rogo, the boss gives him a three months ultimatum upon which Alex’s division should start posting profits for the company failed to which, the office will face closure. Bill notes that the performance of Rogo’s division had dropped significantly in the previous months.
