Chattopadhyay et al state that previously, many have viewed schizophrenic patients as being non-emotional, that is as lacking the capacity to experience emotions like everybody else. This was because of the differences in their inner feelings and how they expressed their emotions. The researchers thus conducted a meta-analysis of electronic journals to determine whether in fact, the above assertion is true, or whether there were any differences.
Their results showed that indeed, schizophrenics do experience emotions just as healthy people do. They state that the medial prefrontal cortex is activated in the same way in both schizophrenics and normal subjects. Thus, this finding shattered the long held myth that schizophrenics do not have the capacity to experience emotions.
