We cannot talk about the employers’ obligations on health, safety, and welfare without mentioning the responsibilities of employees on the same. They too have a role to play in ensuring that health and safety standards are maintained for their own benefit and the benefit of others who might be affected by their omission of duty or responsibility.
Workers are required to adhere to the rules and regulations that have been established concerning health and safety, co-operate with their employers with regard to health and safety, avoid working under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other intoxicating substances and by participating in the trainings and education programs offered by their organizations concerning matters of health and safety. They must also use all machinery, devices, and tools as required and report any defective equipment or work areas to relevant authorities. Furthermore, they should not conduct themselves in improper ways that may pose danger to their own safety, or anyone else’s for that matter.
